DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney crown repair components right here in Brooklyn, with most jobs running between $350 and $900 installed depending on crown condition and access. If you call us by early afternoon, we can usually have Wendell or a crew member on your roof within a day or two. Most Brooklyn homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a water stain on the ceiling near the chimney, or a chunk of crown that landed in the yard after a spring storm.

Call (516) 289-9316

The chimney crown is the concrete cap at the very top of your chimney. It’s what keeps rain and snow from working down into the brick and mortar. When a crown fails, water gets in, and once water gets in, the freeze-thaw cycle in a Brooklyn winter will make quick work of what was once solid masonry. We see it constantly, from Williamsburg to Bay Ridge.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex is best known for their stainless steel chimney liners, but the crown repair components we install are sized to work with the full DuraFlex liner line, including the standard DuraFlex Pro and the heavier DuraFlex 316Ti alloy series. The crown itself isn’t branded the way the liner is – what matters is that the crown repair material bonds correctly to the existing masonry and forms a proper overhang around the liner termination.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: when a DuraFlex liner was installed, the top plate and storm collar that seal the liner at the crown need to be removed and reinstalled correctly when the crown is repaired. If the crown is poured too tight around the liner, or if the wrong sealant is used between the storm collar and the crown, you’ll have a leak within two seasons. We remove and re-bed that top plate on every DuraFlex crown repair we do. It’s a step the national crews skip, and it’s exactly what comes back to bite homeowners later.

For replacement parts, we use OEM DuraFlex top plates and collars when the existing hardware is warped or rusted out. When the hardware is still solid, we use a commercial-grade crown coat and flexible sealant that’s proven on Brooklyn rooftops. You don’t need a full liner replacement just because the crown failed. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the most common call we get. By the time the stain shows up inside, the crown has been failing for months. The water travels down inside the chase, then finds an opening into the living space.
  • Spalling brick or flaking mortar on the chimney exterior. When water gets into the brick and freezes, it expands and shoves the brick face right off. You’ll see brick chips on the roof or in the gutter below the chimney.
  • Visible cracks in the crown itself. Hairline cracks are normal for old concrete. Cracks wide enough to slip a quarter into are a problem. Those are water highways, and they only get wider.
  • Rust stains around the liner top plate or storm collar. The stainless liner itself won’t rust, but the galvanized top plate and collar will. Once they start to go, the seal is compromised and water follows the rust line down.
  • A musty smell coming from the fireplace during humid weather. That’s moisture sitting in the flue. A failing crown is the most common reason, especially in older Brooklyn homes where the crown was poured too thin in the first place.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Brooklyn, a DuraFlex-compatible crown repair typically runs $350 to $900 installed. The low end covers a crown that’s mostly intact with surface cracking – we clean it, fill the gaps with crown coat, and re-seal around the liner hardware. The high end covers a crown that’s blown out enough to need a full rebuild: form work, fresh mortar and concrete, proper overhang, and full reinstallation of the DuraFlex top plate and collar.

What drives the price in Brooklyn specifically: roof access. A three-story brownstone with a steep pitch costs more than a row house with a flat roof. Chimney height matters, and so does the condition of the brick right below the crown. If the top three courses of brick need re-pointing while we’re up there, that adds to the job – and we’ll show you the damage on camera before we touch it.

Every crown repair we do includes the parts, labor, cleanup, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, one call brings Wendell back at no charge. That’s how we’ve worked since 1999.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely inspect a crown from ground level with binoculars, or from a flat roof if it’s accessible and you’re steady on your feet. You’re looking for cracks wider than a quarter, missing chunks, or a crown that doesn’t overhang the brick by at least two inches all around. If you see any of that, you know what you’re dealing with.

What you shouldn’t do is get up on a pitched Brooklyn roof with a bucket of patch material. Crown repair requires working at the edge of a height with mortar and tools, sometimes in wind, always on a surface that isn’t meant for standing. We’ve been on more Brooklyn rooftops than we can count, and we still treat every one of them with respect. If it doesn’t need doing, I’ll tell you that too. If it does need doing, call us at (516) 289-9316 and we’ll give you a straight answer before you spend a dime.
