• Rust stains around the liner top plate or storm collar. The stainless liner itself won’t rust, but the galvanized top plate and collar will. Once they start to go, the seal is compromised and water follows the rust line down.
• A musty smell coming from the fireplace during humid weather. That’s moisture sitting in the flue. A failing crown is the most common reason, especially in older Brooklyn homes where the crown was poured too thin in the first place.
