- Gelco Terra Cotta flue liners and spalling. The older Gelco clay tile liners, especially on brownstones along Flatbush and Park Slope, take a beating from freeze-thaw cycles. A standard brush alone won’t touch third-degree creosote, and a lot of outfits don’t own a whip system.
- Gelco chimney caps rusting at the seams. The factory Gelco caps on older installs were galvanized, not stainless. Twenty years of Brooklyn rain and road salt breaks down those seams. When a cap rusts through, you get water running down the flue, which turns creosote acidic and eats at the liner.
